Attendance at Academic Sessions

Attendance at inter-hospital Grand Rounds, journal club and lectures is mandatory. A resident is expected to attend journal club, lectures and seminars adequately prepared to discuss the topic.

Journal Club
Journal Club papers for discussion must be circulated to the staff and residents a minimum of 14 days prior to the scheduled meeting.

M & M Rounds
The Chief Resident at the hospital where the rounds are held is responsible for collecting all Rounds and submit them to the Program Administrator in a timely manner.

Friday Afternoon Teaching Sessions
The Otolaryngology Seminar Series is a 2.5 year repeating cycle of seminars comprising a comprehensive experience in all aspects of Otolaryngology as well as other topics that address specific aspects of the CanMEDS core competencies. Each resident should have the opportunity to see each seminar twice during his/her residency. Residents are relieved of all elective duties for Friday afternoon lectures and seminars.

All residents are expected to attend these seminars (including PGY1 residents on off-service rotations) which occur on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 and should not leave or miss these sessions unless patient care requires it. The only resident who should ever be called out of a teaching seminar is the on-call resident for the upcoming weekend. All other residents should have their pagers forwarded to the on-call resident. Senior residents should never be bothered during teaching time. The consultant from each hospital that is on-call for the day shall provide second call and backup to the on-call resident.

Academic Half Days
Residents in Otolaryngology are also expected to attend the Academic Half Day Seminars scheduled by the PGE office of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. These seminars occur once a month on Wednesdays – generally in the morning. All consultants are aware of this policy and shall book their cases for that day knowing that they may not have resident assistance for that morning. Residents will normally provide on-call services for emergencies during this time.
